XP offline

mga will also give info on your office system.

when mga is run it will give a text report in notepad.

you can copy this notepad to a flash drive just like you would copy a document to a flash drive, then take the flash drive to a working pc, come to this forum, open up a reply box, insert your flash drive, open flash drive, open the notepad document, select all , choose copy, then in the forum dialog box choose paste,

i have downloaded this mgadiag to my one drive, and it is public, so you can go to my onedrive and download, I use firefox and when I choose to download, I have it set to ask me where to download, then I can choose where I want to download it. if you have not set your browser to let you choose then if you downloaded already it is probably in your documents in a folder called downloads.

https://onedrive.live.com/?cid=d7389b68b3a275ad&mkt=en-US

I have no problem downloading and or saving this tool, cannot understand what you are doing wrong,

I finally figured out how to download the file at your "onedrive" site to my Ubuntu Linux PC. It went into the Downloads folder as Zipper_V.18296713b.exe. I can only assume this is the correct file. After asking for unzip help from the Ubuntu Forum, a kind gentleman told me it appeared to be a self-opening file. With that, I stored it to my flash drive and took it over to my Windows XP machine. Once there, I clicked on its icon and received the following message "Se perdio la conexion" - "the connection is lost".

did you download the file MGADiag??

it is not a zip file, and does not need unzipping., I just got through downloading it to a flash drive, then plugging my flash drive into my pc, and copying the mga diag to my desktop, you might have to right click and choose unblock as it came from another pc, and then double click and it should run ????

I guess I already knew that they are ginuine, but it is satisfying to see that you now accept the fact that they are.

What about other Microsoft software, such as Visual Basic 4. I have a VB4 CD that was given to me about ten years ago. I have thought about buying a VB6 CD, but just haven't got around to it. If I do will I have similar difficulties? It occurs to me that some guys may buy a copy of a VB6 CD, make a copy of the CD and then copy down its product key, and pass the CD on to a buddy who does the same thing, over and over and over. If Microsoft is watching the product key, it could step in a put a stop to this by doing something legal. Not sure I really want to buy a VB6 CD from eBay.

In any case, what do you advise regarding my difficulties taking my Windows XP PC offline. I was hoping there might be a method of disabling Office 2003's capability and penchent for phoning home whenever it or Windows recognizes I've taken my, I SAY MY, PC offline. I might be a little more sympathetic with Microsoft's point of view, if they were still providing some level of technical support.

The only way I can think of to accomplish my goal is to once again put my Windows XP PC back on line for a few hours, allowing enough time for Office to phone home and Norton to update its definitions, and then take the whole thing back offline again. In the future, when Office complains, I'll put it back online again for three of four hours. I have no idea how often I'll have to go through this rigmarole, but I don't want to continually spend as much time as you and I have this week.

you can disable automatic updates.

I have not had this problem with office calling home.

if this happens again, look in event viewer or if you get a message box, give me the exact message or the event source and id number from event viewer and I will do some more research.

Norton, some antivirus' allow you to download definitions to a flash drive and then you can use the flash drive to update your antivirus. you might see if norton will let you do this.

below are some links on visual basic and one link for a free download of a new microsoft visual freeware, but it is not compatible with xp, the other link are free alternatives to visual basic.

I see no hindrance to keeping xp offline, :)

Yesterday, late afternoon I received another of the messages I have told you about. It is a dialog box which likely resembles the initial installation authentication dialog box. There is a message that says a change to my PC hardware configuration has been detected and I need to re-authenticate the Office software. I am offered two ways of doing so: by internet or telephone. Each of these choices have a radio button for the owner to choose his/her preferred method. I quick discovered the telephone method no longer works in the United States but it does work in almost revery other country on the planet. Go figure!

I think now that the advice I am looking for comes down to either of two possible ways of dealing with my situation: permenently disabling the software components in Office or Windows XP that alerts the Office re-authentication dialog box, or some way to re-authenicate the Office software once and forever even though I have taken my PC offline. I suppose now, that I see how paranoid Microsoft really is that neither of these options is really open to me.

OK, right before noon today I put my Windows XP machine back online in hopes of re-establishing authentication of both Windows XP and Office 2003. Not really sure, but I'm guessing that this takes place without the PC owner even being aware of what was happening inside his or her PC.

I wondered around inside the Microsoft website in hopes of finding a way of forcing re-authentication. Did not find anything, but then again, its unlikely I could find dinosaur eggs in the middle of a empty tennis court. Does anyone know of a URL where I can force re-authentication for both Windows XP and/or Office 2003. Perhaps it is a forlorn hope, but I'm hoping doing re-authentication this way will give me three to six months of hassel-free PC'ing.
