Its always better to try the off button first, as that is less of a shock to the PC hardware. Not all the malware disables the PC 'off' button. Installing an on/off switch is also less of a shock to the PC, and a lot easier than getting a dang plug back into the outlet. I been using this one over a year now:

Have it on an extension cord so it's easy to get to. Reaching the outlet requires moving the PC furniture, then a safari through a jungle of cords.
of course your right, Trimis, a direct off switch is better, I mean on a power block
however, i just pulled the plug for 5 years every single day to get rid of the green "Cable In" light in the back the machine.
