Repair install stuck in loop, help!

Sorry, did not realize a reply had been made after your last one,

First I believe you should run checkdisk

if you do not have Recovery Console installed, then run from the start menu

go to start, run, type in cmd

in cmd type in chkdsk c: /r and press enter

type Y for yes and press enter

type exit and press enter

restart pc, allow checkdisk to finish and run again
------------------------

you can view checkdisk report in Event Viewer, applications directory, Winlogon (in the right hand pane)

when you run checkdisk from the run command, the report will not stay on line long enough for you to read it, as it would if you ran it from the recovery console.

NOTE: you do not want to run the recovery console from your installation cd, unless your cd has sp3 slipstreamed into it.

if you were to run the recovery console with the chkdsk command and the cd was at sp2 or earlier and your system is now at sp3, it would really screw up your system.

When checkdisk has been run and there are no errors check updates again and then get back to me with any problems or error messages and please give me the EXACT error message, if I do not answer within a reasonable time please send me a message, I usually try to check back within 24 hours.

Thanks, I ran chkdsk a couple of times already but couldn't get any info... here are the results of this one:

No actually error messages come up when I use windows updates, it just simply won't work... Fix It reports that 'service registration is missing or corrupt'. On Dell Forums I've been advised to make a bootable SP3 CD, so I'm going to give that a try.

read the above thread and see if the solutions from Naman R. will help.

post back with results.

have you been able to get any updates after your clean install?

are you on ie8?

if not you may have to install ie8 and the latest windows installer first before going to updates:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/internet-explorer-8-details.aspx

ie 8 download, ensure your system is correct as this is the 32 bit download.

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8483

installer 4.5

Thanks for the advice, will give these a try... just have to wait for a reponse about a couple of Dell questions concerning the install on the Dell forum!

Okay, Windows Update still isn't working... Fix It is still reporting 'Service registration is missing or corrupt.'

I was reading your other question at Dell,

FIRST, never connect to internet without an antivirus!!

go here and download MSE, it is free, let it update and run a quick scan.

still working on the updates problem

do you have the files shown here? (make sure you have checked to show hidden files in Folder Options)

if you need some files, I can upload them to my skydrive and you can download them to your desktop or a flash drive and install them in the proper location.

only the files dealing with updates WU....

Yes, I have to admit I've been going online without antivirus! Thanks for your ongoing help... will give the MSE a run.

EDIT - just saw the post above, yeah I think all those files are present.

Okay, I've run a full system scan, no threats were found.

EDIT - I've taken a proper look at the files you have there, I'm missing these two:

wstpager.ax

wstrenderer.ax

link to my skydrive where you can download the files and install in Windows/system32

1. click on the file (they are listed alphabetically)

2. click on the download button on top of page

3. save to desktop or to a flash drive

4. scan each file by right clicking and choose scan with MSE

5. you might also have to right click and choose properties and select UNBLOCK

-------------------------------

however, I do not believe these files have anything to do with microsoft updates as they are from sp2.

you can read about them here:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/filedb/wstpager.ax-7790.html

----------------------

when you go to start/allprograms/ the top of the list should show microsoft or windows update

click on this and then tell me what happens, you should be directed straight to windows updates where it will ask you to install an active x, which you should say ok

does this happen?

reply 3:

Check that the Background Intelligent Transfer Service to is set to Automatic and verify the Status is Started.

1.Click Start, Choose Run, and in the Run box, type services.msc, Click OK
2.Locate the Background Intelligent Transfer Service, and right-click to select it.
3.Select Properties, and in the Startup Type list, select Automatic. Verify the service Status is Started.
4.Click OK.
-----------------------------------

Register qmgr.dll and qmgrprxy.dll

1.Click Start, Choose Run and in the Run box, type regsvr32 qmgr.dll, Click OK.
2.Click Start, Choose Run and in the Run box, type regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll, Click OK.

------------------

also, you have updated to IE8 correct?

Yeah, those 2 files made no difference. I ran a full scan with Malwarebytes, no threats found. Followed those steps on the ehow site, manged to find the latest Windows Update Agent here:

http://www.wincert.net/forum/topic/9907-repak-windows-update-agent-767600256/

...reregistered, but no change. Also followed those instructions for the Background Intelligence Transfer Service, still no change... I should point out that something I did earlier changed the name of this service to '@%SystemRoot%\system32\qmgr.dll,-1000', so I think I may have messed something up at some point.

P.S., yeah have IE8 installed.

Why did you change the name of the service?

So far, you have sp3 and ie8 and did you download the latest installer and install it?

http://search.microsoft.com/en-us/DownloadResults.aspx?rf=sp&q=windows+installer+for+xp

this page has the 4.5 installer and an update for this installer please install both.

I will search some more for your update problem, but I am running out of ideas, I have never had a problem with windows updates working after a clean install and I have reinstalled my os several times.

my skydrive again, download wups2.dll to your desktop and copy/paste to system32, if it says a copy is already there then say yes to overwrite. maybe your copy of this dll is corrupted.
Do the following after placing the dll in system32:

Resolution 1: Register the wups2.dll file in Windows XP
To register the wups2.dll file in Windows, perform the following steps:

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service. To do this, follow these steps:

a. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
b. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

net stop wuauserv

2. Register the Wups2.dll file. To do this, follow these steps:

a. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

regsvr32 %windir%\system32\wups2.dll

Note For a computer that is running Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

regsvr32 %windir%\syswow64\wups2.dll

b. Click OK on each verification message that you receive.

3. Start the Automatic Updates service. To do this, type the following command at the command prompt, and then press ENTER:

net start wuauserv

4. Exit the command prompt. To do this type exit, and then press ENTER.

http://www.pbcomp.com.au/windows-xp-updates-fail.html

go to this site and follow the rest of the resolutions if the above solution does not work, but disregard the 3.1 installer if you already have 4.5 installed.
