Windows XP won't open exe. file

I'm trying to install an exe.file I brought to the pc on a flash drive. But whenever I double click it, it just loads for a second and then nothing happens. Same thing when I take the file of the drive and put it on the desktop. Running Windows XP SP2. HELP!!

I have some that load/install (on startup of windows) but remain hidden till they are called on, , , ,

It would be nice if you told us what program you were trying to run since most of us aren't psychics. Help us help you.
