Windows XP Hanging

hi, i got a very awkward problem in my pc ...whenever i boots it starts ok , but as soon as i open any program(like chrome, ms office, my usb modem) it starts to hang a bit ...opens the program but with it help manual of the program also opens .....after that it completely hangs my system and i can't click anything only that help program comes in front ......closing it will again open help manual screen of the program repeatedly. Even chrome also shows chromehelp.com\ctx=keyboard sort of tab and then completely hangs.
but this doesn't occur everytime, after rebooting system for 4-5 times back to back the problem seems to be gone ....and everything works fine but next time when i open my system same problem occurs.
i have gone for searching solutions and i found someplaces recommending correcting registry entry for xp sp3 with Helpctr binaries but that is not a problem with my system.
please urgently help.....greatly appreciated.
thanx in advance.......

sounds like malware, or something loading that wants to take over the pc,

first you will have to insure your system is clean

1. what is your current antivirus?

2. do the following:

Download, install, update and do full scan with these free malware detection programs:

Malwarebytes (MBAM): http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free
SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/

Remove all found, reboot, and run again until scans run clean, these can be removed afterwards if you so choose. Run scans one at a time, please.

-------------------------

then you will need to download autoruns and process explorer, autoruns is for startup programs and process explorer is what is currently running.

AUTORUNS

I would scrutinize what you have loading on StartUp. You need to see if you have programs loading during boot process which might be changed to on demand.
With Autoruns you can uncheck an item, which disables it from starting, or you can right click an item and then delete it. If you uncheck you can recheck to re-enable the item. It is a much safer approach than editing the Registry and better than using msconfig.
Another useful feature of the program is that you can right click an item and select Search Online to get information about the item selected.
When using Autoruns you will need to click on the "Logon" tab to see what is running at start-up.

Process Explorer

you may have to download from a working pc and carryover to the afflicted pc

if running any of these programs hang up pc, try running from safe mode or safe mode with networking, so database can be loaded.

Hanging problem "conquered"

a " HUGE " thanx to you ......
yeah it was i think a trojan and some adwares which was creating such nuisance for me. SAS did tremendous job which my antivirus didn't.
Atleast for last 2 or 3 times after ur advice, this problem hasn't occured. I hope it stays this way.....if some mischief reoccurs,i hope to get ur help again.

THANK YOU once again.....:)

you are welcome

just a note on antivirus, no one antivirus can get everything, it is good to have antivirus running in real time, and malwarebytes and SAS as on demand scanners.

remember to keep them updated, on my pc I do a quick scan daily with my antivirus, and mbam and sas, once a week or so I do a full scan.

scans go faster if pc is defragged.

Have a good day.

hi, there
the problem which i discussed earlier in this thread has occured once again. In similar manner, it is quite strange that my pc works fine one day and on some other day it gives alot of headache as soon as it boots. Autorun is also fine with only my antivirus and two other things opening at the begnning. also regarding Process explorer when my pc is running fine i don't feel like there is any process creating problems. no virus and malware found this time with scans

so what should i do next? also i have already formatted my main partition and installed my same win xp sp3 copy afresh. still the problem persists.

you say you reformatted your c: drive, is the cd a slipstreamed cd?

if you made it on an infected pc, it may be corrupted, scan the cd with malwarebytes

place cd in drive, update malwarebytes, select full scan, a box will open asking which drive you want to scan, clear all boxes except the cd drive with the cd inserted.

scan,

after that it may be that there are still traces of malware which might be left over and a malware removal forum would be the place to go for indepth cleaning.

Did you do a quick format or a full format?? a full format will wipe the drive completely a quick format does not do as well.
