what precaution should I take before going online with Windows Xp

Hi, given that Xp has not received a single security updates in years, what should I do before going online on Windows Xp with Superimum? which security pieces of software should I install to prevent my PC getting immediately infected and taken over by someone in their basement?

My AVG Anti-Virus was such a CPU hog I uninstalled it, and installed safety straps on my office chair instead. I would also recommend goggles or a face shield, and of course some protective gloves. :b

Does not matter what your OS is, or what kind of protective software you install. If someone is serious about targeting you, you're toast.

Most of them aren't dedicated though, instead they are just bots automatically scanning for targets

Install an antivirus. DO NOT INSTALL CLAMWIN, it is trash, I got infected by a botnet and had to quarantine my entire PC because my Windows XP Virtual Machine got infected. Based on my experience, I am currently making an antivirus for Windows XP, you can look out for it here: https://github.com/Martingonn?tab=repositories Once I finish it, I will inform you - it will be completely free!

I stopped going online with XP a couple of years back, not for security reasons as much as for convenience: so many websites had been "modernized" and as such were no more fully compatible with XP (from partly unreadable to showing only a peremptory injunction to "upgrade").

Now to go online I'm using an old PC running on a skeleton version of Win7, totally expendable because should anything happen there it would take me just a few minutes to restore the OS from a full backup (kept on an offline external HD, of course).
Recently I added a KVM switch to allow me to keep an eye on the web even while working on XP, and I'm quite comfortable with that.

I currently use 3 'on demand' scanners - Rogue Killer (Adlice Protect) - and old version of Malwarebytes [V1.09.4.1001] - and Quick Heal Anti Bot. I would make sure Dep is turn on for all programs.

Control Panel -> System -> Advanced.

Under the advanced tab - Performance -> Settings -> Data Execution Prevention

Honestly, DEP and Quick Heal Anti Bot are enough to protect you from 90% of possible infections - those are mostly botnets that user Robert David Graham's version of Masscaner that scans for the RDP vulnreability (mainly on WindowsXP), or the BlueKeep vulnreability (WindowsXP being the most common example). Even simpler would be just to close the RDP port. No door, no break-in.
