No icons Screen Problem

Hi folks I have had a problem with XP booting up without any icons or start bar just the background.
This means that I cannot do any thing and the computer just sits there.

So I have a couple of questions?

Is this a known virus or is it a consequence of no XP support?

What file controls the start bar and icon boot list?
What should it look like?

Anything I can do about it?

Many Thanks Folks D.

First, to get desktop, press crtl + alt + del at the same time, may have to do this several times to get task manager to appear, then go to file, new, type in explorer.exe, and your desktop should appear.

you also need to do the following:

run checkdisk:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265/en-us
How to perform checkdisk

if you do not have Recovery Console installed, then run from the start menu

go to start, run, type in cmd

in cmd type in chkdsk c: /r and press enter

type Y for yes and press enter

type exit and press enter

restart pc, allow checkdisk to finish and run again, or as many times as necessary until no errors are found and fixed.

this is a lengthy process depending on the size of your harddrive, the percentages will fluctuate, this is normal, you can view report in the event viewer.
go to start>run> and type in eventvwr.msc, click on the applications directory, and in the right hand panel choose winlogon.

run malwarebytes free:

https://www.malwarebytes.org/antimalware/

run the free version rebooting as necessary until there are no threats found.

(what is your antivirus?)

after that let's see if the problem has recurred.

post back with the results of each step you have taken.
