how to ghost

Hi all, how are you?

I'm running XP version 5.1 SP 3. I love it but know it is outdated. I woudl liek to geet newer more powerful computer soon, cause mine's 9 years old and probably getting on a bit.

I know there is a way I can ghost my current XP and all its loaded programs onto an external drive and when I get my new computer put it back on a partition on the new computer and run it like I am running my XP now, all the programs installed are there etc.

Now I have heard people saying it can be done but have no idea how. Is there a freeware program I can use? Or can I just copy all my C drive onto a new partition in the new computer and run it as XP? all my data files, cept for My Documents etc, are on a different drive, that is copied onto an external drive anyway for backups. but how do I copy my OS and currently installed programs over to the new computer please?

Many thanks

Cheers

Ed

it always helps to search your question, as some one has probably asked that question already. :), if you need further illumination, let me know.

What drive?

I know it's a daft question, I have read the link you posted, but they all about ghosting it to another drive. Maybe it is the same thing, but I have an existing external drive I dcurrently o my data backups onto. Can I not make another directory in that external drive, say Clone_Dir and clone my existing C drive and all programs onto the Clone_Dir directory or do I need a whole clean drive to put the ghosting on to please? I was hoping when I get my new PC I can then use that Clone_Dir to load onto and have an alternate boot so I can still use my old XP programs and things?

Hope the question makes sense.

Cheers

Ed

ps I am thinking if using HDClone from Miray to do it with, any thoughts on that?

first, backup and ghost (clone) are not the same.

second, when you clone your os, you might not be able to use it on your new pc, there is dual booting, but to dual boot you have to boot the oldest OS first, and xp will most likely not have drivers for your new pc.

Maybe some of the other contributors will jump in here with some answers. I have not ever dual booted so am not sure if you can run the os on a separate drive . or if it will boot if you copy the clone to a partition on your new pc.
Let's see if eatup and/or Aunty Jack will step in with some thoughts.
