Cannot activate XP when running in Virtualbox

The following is for XP running under Virtualbox software using the XP CD that came with my old HP PC.

XP runs, but immediately asks for it to be activated. I get no 30 day period when I can run any programs. When I try to use the telephone method of activation no long string of numbers is given only - - - - -.

In Safe Mode I tried rundll32.exe syssetup,SetupOobeBnK, but that still does not give me 30 days. This means I cannot Run xp_activate32.exe from a normal XP session. I tried editing the Registry to remove the OOBE entry and deleted the wpa files, but that did not work. I don’t know if Virtualbox reverts to the original Registry after a restart.

When I tried in Safe Mode to run xp_activate32.exe it did not produce the correct validation code, but gave the error message ‘License manager has failed’. None of the blue/green screens with the normal three options for activating by ‘internet/phone/remind me’ were displayed.

Any ideas? A method that gives me 30 days would help. Thanks

This is an old text file I had saved, which suggests it's a method I've used in the past......

It's been a few years since I installed XP on any machines, but as I recall I didn't go through any activation process because I deleted all the WGA (Windows Genuine Advantage) files from the setup ISO ahead of time. Other people are claiming phone activation still works, but it didn't work for me many years ago now. Anyway, check out these threads if removing WGA didn't make it happen for you after install:
